Sadly, the term, hero is all to commonly used today to describe people simply doing their job,one we pay them to do, whether or not its inherently dangerous such as fireman, police officer, soldier, sailor or whatever. Thus "hero' unfortunately has lost some its luster. Yesterday, Bob Sperry, former president of VVA 989 and a retired Marine Corp major was killed during a bank robbery aiding another customer threatened by the perpetrator. bob was well known and loved by the veteran community in Reno, a soft spoken and strong advocate for homeless veterans, like many spread to thin in his retirement involved in the Veteran's Guest House, the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery and active in a myriad programs and activities at the Reno VA hospital and the Reno Vet Center. We -the VVA family to often focus on the notion of 'Never again, will one generation of veterans abandon another' and forget the other motto the VVA stands for, " In Service" to America. What distinguishes veterans from most citizens is service, we served our country and we proudly continue to participate in a veteran service organization. Bob Sperry died in service to a fellow citizen stepping up because of a need for an old marine and recognizing no one else was there to do it. Semper fidelis. terry hubert NSC president.

"Sadly, we mark this time, at the passing of our friend, comrade, and fellow Veteran, Bob Sperry!

With humble prayers and pleasant memories, we mark the untimely passing of our friend, comrade, and fellow Veteran, Bob Sperry. Our prayers are for Bob's wife and family and his many friends. May we all find peace, in having known this exceptional man.

Semper Fidelis, our brother and our friend!

 Richard G. (Rick) Shuster..."
