President’s
Report November 5, 2013
The October 18th Veterans Care Assistance Program
Gala at the Suncoast Hotel and Casino was well attended and the Chapter was
recognized as a major contributor to the program. We were not able to
participate in the week long celebration of Vietnam Veterans in Mesquite
although I know that George was part of the escort for the Traveling Wall
sponsored by VVA Chapter 993. I understand all went well. The wall is now in
Laughlin.
The Veterans Office at UNLV will be celebrating Veterans Day
on Wednesday November 13th as the University
will be closed on the 11th. I
will be guest speaker representing the Chapter as they focus on it being
the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. The Chapter is also
presenting the University with a POW/MIA flag to be raised at the Veterans
Memorial on Campus as part of this year’s celebration.
You may recall that Sherri Burris stopped by the office some
months ago. Her deceased husband Jim was a Combat Wounded Vietnam Vet who never
got around to stopping in at the Chapter Hall. He was awarded a Purple Heart
Medal Posthumously and because of the government shutdown no government
officials were available to present the Medal to the family at the services out
at the veterans Cemetery. I had the honor of doing so. The event made the local
news and was picked up nationally.
The Veterans Coalition or Roundtable will continue to meet
here at the Chapter Hall. Next meeting will be in January then every other
month.
We will have a report on the Intertribal POW WOW later. I am
happy to tell you that Mike Giancola has been selected as a board member for
the planning of future POW WOWs.
The dialysis Unite is opening at the VA Hospital. There is
an open house this Thursday and Friday. The hospital is fully functioning at
this time. The Women’s Unite expansion is set to start this month as is the
Emergency Departments. Construction of the Admin Building is projected for next
summer/fall. After it is open the Long Term Care Unit will open in the vacated
space.
